Think you’re too busy to exercise? Think again.
One of the most common excuses people make for why they don’t exercise is lack of time. From work to kids to chores to social activities, it’s no surprise people have trouble finding time to fit in one more activity. And unfortunately, exercise is often ranked low on the list of priorities compared to everything else clamoring for attention. However, while you may try to ignore exercise, the health benefits of exercise can’t be ignored.
Experts recommend that most healthy adults get at least 75 minutes of intense physical activity or 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week.
Strength-training exercise should be incorporated into your workout at least two days a week. Fitting in a meager 30 minutes a day for five days will take care of those 150 minutes each week. Have trouble finding 30 minutes to commit to exercise? Break it up. Try three 10-minute intervals of exercise. Just keep in mind the fact the amount of time you spend working out will depend on whether you reach your weight loss and fitness goals.
Ready to make exercise a part of your life? The first step is to take a close look at your calendar. Claim any hidden pockets of time for exercise. For those days you have trouble finding extra time, you may need to get creative. Here’s how.
Fitness at Work
You’ve got meetings, appointments, and deadlines to meet. How can you fit in one more thing? Good question. Now, ask yourself this: How do you spend your lunch break? Do you go out to eat or browse the Internet? Stop doing nothing for your body and start doing something for it by spending your lunch break exercising. Maybe there’s a gym, a walking track, or even sidewalks nearby. If you want company or accountability, find a co-worker to join you.
You can also make the most of your daily commute. Do you live close enough to walk or ride your bike? If you take the train or bus, get off several blocks early and walk the rest of the way. Live within biking distance? Hop on your bike and go!
Fitness with Friends and Family
Maybe you’re hesitant to start an exercise routine because you’re afraid it will detract from the precious little time you get to spend with family or friends. Why not incorporate exercise with your social time? You don’t have to exercise alone. Take a family hike or bike ride with friends. Play a game of soccer or kickball in the back yard. Encourage your friends to join a recreational sports league with you.
Fitness in Between
Constantly look for ways to include exercise in your daily routine. Your schedule may be filled with chores and errands, but you can still make them count! Mopping the floor, scrubbing the bathroom, mowing the lawn, or raking leaves all get your heart pumping and can count as exercise.
While running errands, park your car on the outskirts of the parking lot and walk the distance. Carry your grocery bags into your home one at a time. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Even an evening spent on the couch watching TV can be turned into an exercise opportunity. Pick up a pair of hand weights and pump it up! You can also take a ride on a stationary bike or get on the floor for some push-ups and sit-ups, all while you watch your favorite show.
Fitness First
If you’re going to stick with an exercise routine, it’s got to be convenient for your schedule. Whether in the morning, afternoon, or evening and whether at work, home, or play, find a time and place that works for you, write it on your schedule, and commit to it.
