Most of us have experienced the difference between doing something and paying attention to how we’re doing it. That’s what this week’s PRECISION workout from Coach Ro’s PILATES program invites us to explore.
We might walk the same familiar route every morning without thinking much about our steps. Then we notice a change in the sidewalk, an uneven surface, or something in our path, and suddenly we’re paying closer attention to where we place our feet.
The movement hasn’t become entirely different, but our awareness of it has.
Sometimes the smallest adjustments in how we move can change what we feel, how we maintain control, and what we learn from an exercise.
It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t always require us to do something bigger or harder. Sometimes it begins with noticing something we’ve been doing all along.
The Difference Is in the Details
When we first learn an exercise, much of our attention goes toward understanding the basic movement. Where should our feet go? Which direction are we moving? How do we get from the starting position to the finish?
That’s a natural part of learning, and there’s value in becoming comfortable with those fundamentals.
But once the movement begins to feel familiar, we have an opportunity to pay attention to things we may have overlooked. We might notice how our weight shifts, whether we’re holding our breath, or how the position of our pelvis influences what happens through the rest of the body. This attention to concentration, controlled breathing, and body awareness is also central to Pilates, where the quality of movement matters alongside the movement itself.
Those details don’t necessarily change the exercise we’re performing. They can change how deliberately we’re performing it.
That’s where precision becomes interesting.
It isn’t about creating a perfect-looking movement. It’s about developing enough awareness to understand what we’re asking our bodies to do.
What to Expect in This PRECISION Workout Preview
This week’s PRECISION workout preview runs approximately five minutes and comes from PILATES, Coach Ro’s four-week Pilates-inspired program.
PRECISION builds on the connection introduced in POWERHOUSE and the stability explored in CONTROL. This time, the emphasis moves toward the smaller details of positioning, alignment, and how we travel through each movement.
In the preview, Ro guides you through mat-based Pilates-inspired movement, including controlled seated positioning and movement through the trunk. Rather than focusing on how quickly you can complete each repetition, give yourself time to follow her coaching and notice how the movement feels.
The goal isn’t to reproduce every position exactly as Ro demonstrates it. Your range of motion, flexibility, and experience may be different. What matters is finding a version that allows you to move comfortably and with intention.
Workout Length: Approximately 5 minutes
Equipment: Exercise mat and enough room to move comfortably
Style: Pilates-inspired core work, body awareness, alignment, and controlled movement
Small Adjustments Can Change What You Feel
Imagine performing an exercise while paying very little attention to your position. You know the general movement, so you repeat it until the set is finished.
Now imagine doing the same exercise while noticing how you’re sitting or standing, whether you’re creating unnecessary tension, and how the movement changes when you adjust your position slightly.
You may discover that a small adjustment helps you feel more supported. Perhaps you can move through the exercise without holding your breath, or you recognize that a smaller range allows you to maintain better control.
Sometimes the difference is noticeable immediately. Other times, it takes several repetitions before you begin to recognize what has changed.
Neither experience needs to become a judgment about whether you’re doing the exercise correctly.
The point is that you’re learning to recognize the relationship between your position, your movement, and what you’re feeling.
That’s a skill worth developing.
Precision Isn’t Perfection
The word precision can sound demanding.
It may bring to mind the idea that every exercise must be performed with exact positioning, perfect alignment, and no room for mistakes. For someone who is new to Pilates, that expectation could make the workout feel more intimidating than helpful.
But that’s not how I want us to approach it.
Precision is about paying attention to the details that matter for the movement you’re practicing. It doesn’t require your body to match someone else’s proportions, flexibility, or range of motion.
You may need to bend your knees, reduce the distance you move, or change your position to feel more supported. Those adjustments aren’t evidence that you’re missing the point of the exercise. They’re often part of discovering how to perform it appropriately for your body.
We can take movement seriously without expecting ourselves to perform it perfectly.
And we can become more skilled without turning every repetition into a test.
Familiarity Creates Room for Awareness
There’s something useful about returning to the same workout more than once.
The first time, you’re often occupied with figuring out what comes next. You watch the instructor, listen for cues, and try to coordinate movements that may not feel natural yet.
By the second or third time, some of that uncertainty begins to fade. You recognize an exercise before it’s explained, remember where your hands belong, or anticipate how one movement leads into another.
That familiarity gives you room to notice more.
Instead of spending all your attention remembering the exercise, you may begin noticing your breathing, the support through your center, or whether one side feels different from the other.
This is one of the reasons PILATES repeats its five workouts throughout the four-week program. Repetition isn’t simply about doing the same thing again. It creates opportunities to experience familiar movements with greater awareness.
The exercise may remain the same while your understanding of it develops.
The Details Matter Outside the Workout Too
We don’t always think about precision when we’re going about our day, but many ordinary activities involve small adjustments that help us move comfortably and confidently.
Consider reaching for something on a high shelf, stepping around an object, getting out of a chair, or lifting something from the floor. We usually focus on accomplishing the task rather than thinking about every movement involved.
And that’s understandable. We shouldn’t need to analyze every step we take.
But practicing body awareness during exercise can help us become more familiar with how we position ourselves, shift our weight, and coordinate different parts of our bodies.
The purpose isn’t to make everyday movement complicated. It’s to build enough familiarity with our bodies that we have more options when something feels awkward or unfamiliar.
Sometimes the most useful thing we learn during a workout isn’t a new exercise.
It’s a better understanding of a movement we already knew.
This Week’s Challenge
As you move through PRECISION, choose one exercise and give it your full attention.
Rather than trying to monitor every detail at once, focus on something specific. Maybe it’s your breathing, the position of your pelvis, or whether you’re maintaining support through your center as the movement progresses.
Notice what happens when you make a small adjustment. Does the movement feel more comfortable? Can you maintain better control? Do you recognize something you hadn’t noticed before?
You don’t need to discover a dramatic difference, and you certainly don’t need to finish with every detail figured out.
The challenge is simply to become a little more aware of what you’re doing.
Over time, that awareness can become part of how you move.
Continue Exploring PILATES
PRECISION is the third of five workouts inside PILATES, Coach Ro’s four-week Pilates-inspired program designed to develop core-focused strength, stability, mobility, and full-body connection.
POWERHOUSE begins by establishing connection through the center. CONTROL builds on that foundation by challenging stability while the body moves. PRECISION brings attention to the details of how those movements are performed.
Next, FLOW will begin bringing those elements together into a more continuous movement experience, followed by LENGTHEN, which emphasizes mobility and recovery.
Each guided workout is approximately 21–26 minutes, with options and modifications to help you find an appropriate starting point. The same five workouts repeat each week, allowing you to become more familiar with the movements while continuing to explore their different challenges.
Start Building Healthier Habits
Learning to pay attention to the details doesn’t have to stop when we leave the exercise mat.
Sometimes building healthier habits begins with noticing things we usually do automatically. How often do we take a break from sitting? Are we giving ourselves enough time to eat a satisfying meal? What helps us feel prepared to make healthier choices when the day gets busy?
We don’t need to examine every decision or change everything at once. A little more awareness can help us recognize which adjustments might make everyday habits easier to maintain.
Our Healthy Lifestyle Starter Guide offers practical ways to begin building healthier routines around movement, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and everyday wellness.
